Wood screws
Wood chips are commonly used to join two pieces of wood together, in the timber construction industry for the production of furniture and roofs and doors. Screws are usually made of steel and have a countersunk or raised head with a slotted square driver. The threads are tapered and in many cases have a plain shank. The materials used to make wood screws are mainly steel and brass, but aluminum can also be used. The protective coating on most screws is electro-galvanized sheet, other protective coatings are also available.
Thread
The threads on wood screws are designed to bite into the wall of a pre-drilled hole in the wood. If wood screws are assembled without predrilling holes, the wood will often crack and the screws will not hold as well as screws driven into pilot holes. There are specialized wood screws that can be used to pre-drill your own holes or are designed with cut threads to minimize cracking.
 Furniture fasteners
Set nuts are part of many woodworking joints and are used as internal reinforcements. These barrel nuts are considered fasteners within the joint system and have parallel threads that need to mate with parallel thread screws.
unique furniture fasteners
Flat furniture often uses cam pins that lock via a rotating cam; screws with their own shanks and thread profiles are also recognized; both fasteners are unique to the furniture industry.
